03.10.13 - Sign Of The Times

How long does it take for a photograph to become separated from its original context? Perhaps it is a decade, maybe it is the age of the viewer, possibly the style dictated by the technology - whichever, or all, there is a reason to make images of the mundane in the moment.

Brief -
Choose a quote and then from that chosen quote take a set of images to represent the quote with something of the current day.

Outcome -
To produce 4-6 images, printed by ink - jet and to create a powerpoint presentation of the process taken to capture the 4-6 images.

Duration -
For this mini module we will have 3 weeks to produce and show the final images.

Ideas -
Quote One - "Its important I suppose to preserve a little bit of Old England."
Show something that is current now but will be seen as historic or different in 25yrs times, e.g. Shops, Signs, Technology and brands.

Quote Two - "This is my clutter. This is me. Take it. If you don't like get it out and that's your loss."
Take a set of images that are personal to me, so photograph my own things (my own clutter).
Photograph another person clutter, so from a different persons point of view.
and lastly make it a general thing, so photograph how a nation clutters.

Quote Three - "It sounds boring, but i seem to spend a lot of time just staring at the wall."
Photograph peoples walls in their homes e.g. what they have on their walls.
Or photograph Graffiti on public walls out and about.

For Next Week -
Bring in cut- outs, research etc to show what my ideas are and what my images will be about.

10.10.13 - Sign of the times (part 2)

Throughout this lecture for "Signs of the times" in our pairs we had to gather information, research and images to show our ideas for the quote we chose the pervious week.
The quote me and Liv have chosen is " It sounds boring, but i seem to spend a lot of time just staring at the wall."

Research -
For our research we first created a mind map that had a few different side headings of things that first came to our minds when we read the quote.

The different side headings that we came up with for this quote were :-

Style of Shots -
  • Macro of decoration and detail
  • Collage
  • General wall shots
  • Martin Parr

Shot Ideas -
  • Decoration (graffiti, wallpaper, ornaments)
  • Walls outside (red brick, breeze block, dry stone)
  • House walls (bedroom, living room, wallpaper)

Photographs of Walls -
  • picturesofwalls.com
  • Graffiti
  • House walls (indoor)
  • Type of walls (build)

Generational Differences -
  • Style
  • Materials
  • Decorations
Generations -
  • Kids room
  • Teens room
  • Adults room
  • OAP's room
  • Covering all different generations
For the next steps in our research we went on to the internet and found some images that went along side our mind map. These are images to show the ideas that we came up with:-

After finding these images to show our different ideas, we decided to focus on taking photographs that would represent the 4 different generations stated on our mind map - Kids, Teens, Adults and OAP's. In total we will have 6 final images, 4 images of wide view shots of bedroom walls, one of each generation and then the last 2 images will be macro shots, one showing something in the kids room and one showing something in the OAP's room.

17.10.13 - This is England

Brief -
Journeying through the Shires for this book, from service station to farmers' market, along branch lines and country lanes, through countless girt shops, gastropubs and hotel receptions, I came to see that there is a new iconography of Middle England beyond spinsters and cycle-clips. If i were compiling the new I-Spy book of Middle England, you would score points not just for spinsters but for ginsters, not just for evensong but for loft conversions, CCTV cameras, adverts for firms doing patio improvements on people's drives;white-towelling-clad hen parties in health spars, trampolines in suburban gardens, those yellow :Cleaning in Progress" signs, yummy mummies in black Suzuki jeeps, Top Gear DVD's, polish chambermaids, Diana Princess of Wales, Cheery little knots of smokers round patio heaters in beer gardens and sad little bouquets of flowers taped to pelican crossings.

What images summaries todays England to you? Which Photographers/Artists have documented or impacted upon our national persona? Is there a sartorial code; a North/South visual divide; or the lesser mentioned East/West one (which is more politically motivated than cultural).

Outcome -  For this module we should create a portfolio of images that provide a narrative for your view of the state of the nation - We will need to make between 4-6 prints for the final hand in as well as a powerpoint presentation documenting your working process and journey to the final set.
The prints needn't be larger than A5 and can be laser -prints, ink jets or any other type -  they are purely for peer appraisal and the images should be included in the Powerpoint.

The emphasis of this project is in the method of production and style of presentation, which should be experimental and as diametrically opposite to your current/previous methods as possible.

Duration -
For this mini module we will have 3 weeks to produce and show the final images.

Ideas/ Research-
To start off with some ideas, we made a mind-map of things that first came to our minds when think  about England. We came up with things like Red Post boxes, Teenage Chav Mums, Tea and Coffee, Chip Shops, Public Transport, OAP's in town centres, Kids in school uniforms etc. Here below is the Mind-map we made.

Next we decided one 3 different things to focus on and which would later be our final images images, The things we decided to focus on for this project and that we "England" to us were Red post boxes, Chip shops and Public Transport.
We have decided to take 2 images for each theme, the images we will be first a wide shot image of the whole thing and then second image will be a macro shot. so in total we will end up with 6 final images for this project. Here below is another mind-map showing this.

Next we went on the internet to find some images of a Post box, Chip shop and Bus Station to show what kind of pictures we wanted to end up with and the style we would be taking them in, so here below are the images we found off the internet to give an idea of what our images will look like.

14.11.13 - Sound and Vision

Brief-
This mini project is all about sound and vision coming together. Its all about what we see in our minds when a piece of music is played. What do we see? How do we feel? Everybody will see and feel something different when listening to the same piece of music, it could be things like a scene out of a film, a picture, a colour or even a person.
For this project we were given 4 different pieces of music, each from a different genera of music.
  • Corla
  • Classical
  • Folk
  • Modern
Outcome-
Pick one o the above gener of songs and then to create a moving image of the scene that we see in our mind when the piece of music is being played.

Ideas -
For this project I have decided to choose both the Coral and Modern pieces of music. The image that came to mind when I heard the Coral piece of music was a early morning walk, with leaves floating by in the water from the river.
When I listened to the second piece of music, which is the Modern, I thought of traffic, whether that be cars, buses, trains or even people walking in a town centre.

Here below are some images I have found off the internet to show my ideas for my moving image.

For my moving image, I decided to make a video from the app "Vine".

Vine is the best way to see and share life in motion. Create short, beautiful, looping videos in a simple and fun way for your friends and family to see.
• Unlimited uploads and free

• Instantly post videos on Vine, then share to Twitter and Facebook!

• Find, follow, and interact with people close to you

• Explore trending posts, featured hashtags and editor's picks

• And so much more.

Here are below are the 2 different Vine videos that I made.

There first link is to show my "Traffic" idea which goes along side the Modern piece of music. Also below is a still image just to show an example of what is looks like.
